What are Condom Catheters?
Condom catheters are urine catheters for men, which can be worn like a condom. These external catheters are designed for people who are able to drain urine but have issues like mobility problems or incontinence. This is a beneficial device for men with urinary incontinence due to conditions like dementia, Overactive bladder (OAB) which causes sudden urges to urinate but the patient cannot control it.
External catheters are an excellent alternative to internal catheters in many circumstances. Compared to internal catheters, these medical devices are more comfortable and convenient. However, internal catheters cannot be replaced with external ones in all cases.
Advantages of Condom Catheters
Condom catheters have several advantages over internal catheters. They are much more comfortable than internal catheters in many ways. For example, they cause lesser movement restrictions for the patient. They can be connected easily to the body without any invasive process. This means that nothing has to be inserted into the patient’s body and can be easily put on even without the assistance of a doctor or nurse.
Another significant benefit of external catheters is that they are less likely to cause a catheter-associated urinary tract infection.
Can External catheters be helpful in every case of incontinence and urine-related problems?
The answer is No. External catheters cannot be helpful in every case of incontinence. For example, in case of urine not draining out of the bladder, an internal catheter may be needed to bypass the problem. In cases like that of urinary retention, where the condition prevents the patient from completely emptying the bladder, external catheters may not be helpful. External catheters may not be helpful for patients with conditions like Neurogenic bladder and Urinary tract blockage.
